Comprehensive primary care

At HCA Virginia Physicians, our primary care doctors offer high-quality services through multiple types of practices, including:

Family practice

Family practice providers treat patients from infancy to adulthood for many common medical problems as well as acute and chronic illnesses. With a particular emphasis on the family unit, they provide preventive services, health maintenance exams and health education.

Internal medicine practice

Internal medicine practices manage medical concerns for adolescents and adults. They perform regular preventive health maintenance exams and health screening tests. Internists are trained to deal with a range of medical problems and determine when a referral for specialty care is necessary.

Pediatric practice

Pediatric practices specialize in the treatment of infants, children and adolescents, generally through the age of 19. Pediatricians provide medical care for children that includes immunizations, school physicals and well child checkups.

Immunizations/shots

Our primary care physicians provide important immunizations to protect your family from potentially harmful diseases. These vaccines work with your body's natural defense systems to reduce the risk of infection and develop immunity to diseases. Our healthcare providers will help you determine the appropriate vaccination schedule for you or your loved one based on age and medical history.

Some of the common vaccines we offer include:

  • Chickenpox vaccine
  • Hepatitis A and B vaccines
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine
  • Influenza vaccine (flu shot)
  • Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine
  • Polio vaccine
  • Tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine

School and sports physicals

Most schools and sports leagues require children to receive a physical exam before participation. We offer specific medical exams to screen for potential health problems and prevent sports-related injuries. During a sports physical, our doctor or physician assistant will:

  • Check your child's blood pressure
  • Document your child's height and weight
  • Test your child's eyesight
  • Check your child's flexibility, strength and overall fitness
  • Review your child's medical history

Wellness checkups

Scheduling a checkup for yourself or a family member is a great way to keep everyone healthy. During a wellness visit, we will perform a complete physical exam and provide any immunizations that are due. For children, the physical exam will measure growth and development and test hearing and vision. For adults, we often prescribe routine blood work on a yearly basis.

Well woman exam and pap smears

We provide well woman exams to perform routine checkups for women's reproductive health. We recommend women come in once a year for this physical examination, which includes a pap smear test, breast examination and pelvic examination. A pap smear test is performed as part of the pelvic exam to check for cervical cells changes that could develop into gynecologic cancer.
